EH&E Principal Receives Prestigious Regional EPA Environmental Achievement Award



Needham, Massachusetts - John Spengler, Ph.D, Principal of Environmental Health & Engineering, Inc. (EH&E), was presented a Lifetime Achievement Merit Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) New England Office at the 40-year EPA Earth Day Celebration in Boston, MA on April 22, 2010.

"This award from the EPA recognizes the incredible effort both John Spengler and George Buckley have made to energizing and engaging students and developing a curricula that challenges individuals to look outside themselves to the larger world beyond," said Jack McCarthy, President of EH&E. "Their efforts, over the past 30 years, have had an incredible influence in shaping current thinking on environmental matters, not only in the Boston area but, when you look at the alumni of their program, throughout the United States and much of the world. Their continued leadership and personal commitment is truly inspiring and this award is well deserved."

In addition to his position at EH&E, Dr. Spengler also serves as Akira Yamaguchi Professor of Environmental Health and Human Habitation within the Department of Environmental Health at the Harvard School of Public Health.

Since 1970, the EPA New England has presented Environmental Merit Awards in recognition of significant contributions to environmental awareness and problem solving. At this year's Earth Day Celebration, John Spengler and George Buckley, Assistant Direc­or of Environmental Management Programs at the Harvard Extension School, received a Lifetime Achievement Merit Award for their leadership in educational and outreach programs, consulting and community service, and participation on numerous boards of environmental and scientific organizations.

Spengler and Buckley founded a program to offer Environmental Management courses as part of the Harvard University Extension School. As a result of this program, over 5,000 students - from business, industry, government agencies, nonprofit organizations, the military, education and the media - have taken courses in Environmental Management, Global Climate Change, Sustainable Communities, and Life Cycle Analysis.
