Scheduled for June 28-29, 2012, Dynamic Testing of Soil and Rock: Field and Laboratory symposium will assess state-of-the-art knowledge of methods of determining shear modulus, damping, and shear wave velocity for purposes of improving ASTM standards. Some topics of interest include comparison of in situ and laboratory testing; preparation of soft and very stiff samples; in situ high-level strain measurements; dynamic properties of unsaturated soils; and testing of calcareous materials.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa., - Papers are invited for a symposium on Dynamic Testing of Soil and Rock: Field and Laboratory, to be held June 28-29, 2012, at the Sheraton San Diego in San Diego, Calif. Sponsored by ASTM International Committee D18 on Soil and Rock, the symposium will be held in conjunction with the June standards development meetings of the committee. The objectives of the symposium are to assess the state-of-the-art knowledge of methods of determining shear modulus, damping and shear wave velocity for purposes of improving ASTM standards. Authors are sought for presentations and a panel discussion on current methods for the dynamic testing of soil and rock. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: o Comparison of in situ and laboratory testing;
o Preparation of both soft and very stiff samples;
o In situ high-level strain measurements;
o Precision and bias of lab and in situ dynamic/cyclic methodologies;
o Effect of soil fabric on cyclic and dynamic properties;
o Testing of very soft materials in situ and in the laboratory;
o Dynamic properties of unsaturated soils;
o Testing of calcareous materials; and
o Interpretation of laboratory pulse-wave tests. Interested participants must submit a 250-300 word abstract by June 28, 2011. The abstract must include a clear definition of the objective and approach of the work discussed, pointing out material that is new, and present sufficient details regarding results. The presentation and manuscript must not be of a commercial nature nor can it have been previously published. Symposium co-chairmen Willard Degroff and Ronald Chaney will notify you via postal mail by Aug. 22, 2011, of your paper's acceptability for presentation at the symposium. Symposium presenters are required to submit their papers to the Journal of ASTM International (JAI).
