Duane Smith Named TAPPI Fellow for 2011

(Fulton, N.Y.) - R. Duane Smith, Davis-Standard's Product Manager of Specialty Winding, has been named a TAPPI Fellow for 2011. This prestigious award is an honorary title bestowed upon a small percentage of TAPPI's international membership. It is given to individuals who have made extraordinary technical or service contributions to the industry and/or the association. TAPPI is the leading association for the worldwide pulp, paper, packaging and converting industries.

"Duane has become widely respected throughout the paper, film and nonwoven production industries for his technical knowledge on web handling and winding," said Larry N. Montague, president and CEO of TAPPI. "His many contributions warrant his distinction as a TAPPI Fellow."

Smith has worked in the industry for 38 years, first at the Black Clawson Company and now at Davis-Standard, LLC. He has been an active member of TAPPI for more than 30 years. During this time, he has received two winding patents and has made more than 50 technical presentations throughout North America, Europe and Asia. He has published more than 16 technical articles in major international trade journals and magazines, has been an instructor at nine TAPPI short courses and has authored two books through TAPPI Press. He has provided valuable leadership, serving as TAPPI Chair of the Winding Technical Committee and Chair of the Finishing and Converting Division. He has also been the TAPPI PLACE Conference Session Chair, Flexible Packaging Technical Program Committee Chair and Chair of the Flexible Packaging Committee. He received the 2000 TAPPI Finishing and Converting Division Award as well as the 2008 TAPPI PLACE Division Technical Award for his many technical contributions in the areas of web handling and winding.
