Dr. Warren Haggard Receives ASTM International Award of Merit for Contributions to Surgical Implant Standards



W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.– Warren Haggard, Ph.D., professor and Herff chair of excellence in biomedical engineering at the University of Memphis in Memphis, Tenn., has received the ASTM International Award of Merit from Committee F04 on Medical and Surgical Materials and Devices.



Haggard was honored for his “outstanding leadership and high productivity in fostering the development and promulgation of surgical implant standards.” The Award of Merit and its accompanying title of fellow is ASTM’s highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to standards activities.



A member of ASTM International and Committee F04 since 1994, Haggard currently serves on several F04 subcommittees and is chairman of F40.04, Division IV – Tissue Engineered Medical Products. His contributions to the committee have been recognized with a 2008 Award of Appreciation; the 2007 Patrick G. Laing Award, the highest award from F04; the 1999 Leroy Wyman Award; and the 1997 Robert E. Fairer Award. He also received a Service Award in 2011 for his three-year term on the ASTM board of directors (2009-2011).



At the University of Memphis, Haggard pursues and directs tissue engineering material research and teaches and mentors students. His research activities at the university focus on bone graft substitutes, functional tissue repair, modified tissue scaffolds, infection prevention, and local delivery of therapeutic and biological agents. He is expanding collaborations with industrial researchers, particularly on bio-orthopaedic materials, and received the University of Memphis Herff College of Engineering Outstanding Faculty Research Award in 2012.



Prior to joining the University of Memphis faculty in 2004, Haggard held several positions at Wright Medical Technology in Arlington, Tenn., most recently as vice president of advanced technology. While there, he managed research and development for the extremity product and biological materials groups in addition to the mechanical testing and analysis departments.



A fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Haggard is also a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the Orthopaedic Research Society, the Society for Biomaterials, the Tissue Engineering Society and the Wound Healing Society. He has written book chapters and numerous articles for peer-reviewed journals as well as made many presentations at local, national and international meetings.



A graduate of Auburn University, Auburn, Ala., where he earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, Haggard received his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, Ala.
