April 13, 2010 - Thomas Langill, Ph.D., technical director at American Galvanizers Association, was elected chairman of ASTM International Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products for one 2-year term. As member of ASTM International since 1994, Langill has chaired Subcommittee A05.13 on Structural Shapes and Hardware Specifications and has been active member of several ASTM committees. Langill's professional career has focused on materials engineering and failure analysis.

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa.-Thomas Langill, Ph.D., technical director at the American Galvanizers Association in Centennial, Colo., has been elected chairman of ASTM International Committee A05 on Metallic-Coated Iron and Steel Products for a two-year term. Committee A05 includes more than 270 members who oversee 74 ASTM standards on the protection of iron and steel products against corrosion by use of metallic coatings and non-metallic coatings.

A member of ASTM International since 1994, Langill also chairs Subcommittee A05.13 on Structural Shapes and Hardware Specifications. He is an active member of several ASTM committees, including A01 on Steel, Stainless Steel and Related Alloys; B02 on Nonferrous Metals and Alloys; D01 on Paint and Related Coatings, Materials and Applications; F16 on Fasteners; and G01 on Corrosion of Metals, where he serves as secretary on the main committee and chairs two G01 subcommittees. In 2009, he was honored with the ASTM Award of Merit, the highest organizational recognition for individual contributions to ASTM standards activities.

Langill's professional career has focused on materials engineering and failure analysis. He has assisted in the development of laser systems for U.S. military systems, and he has performed failure analysis on electronic components. At the American Galvanizers Association, where he has held the position of technical director since 1994, he concentrates on training, specification writing and materials analysis.

In addition to ASTM International, Langill is a member of NACE International, the American Society of Civil Engineers, ASM International, the American Welding Society, the Society for Protective Coatings, and the Association for Iron and Steel Technology. He earned his B.S. and M.S. in physics from John Carroll University, University Heights, Ohio, and he holds a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.
