Dow Corning Addresses Growing Demand for High-performance Solutions in Water-based Coatings

At the Asia Pacific Coatings Show, Dow Corning experts will be on hand to discuss ways to improve the performance of water-based paints, inks and coatings, as well as solventborne and solventless coatings

MIDLAND, MICHIGAN, USA – Regulations and consumer trends continue to spur the demand for paints, inks and coatings featuring water-based technologies. As the global coatings industry strives to meet this demand, the key to success is delivering high-performance benefits without impacting ease of use or driving up costs.

According to Paint Coatings Industry Magazine, water-based coatings commanded a 52 percent share of the market in terms of pounds and 40 percent in terms of dollars in 2013.

Formulators and manufacturers are taking advantage of this growth market with the help of Dow Corning® brand silicon-based additives that deliver multiple benefits and solve processing problems while minimizing potential negative impacts on coating properties.

Dow Corning responds to coatings industry demands

Dow Corning® 52 Additive illustrates the point. Designed to customize slip and improve scratch and abrasion resistance in water-based wood coatings, the product also offers blocking resistance, improves sandability and provides a good hand feel. Plus, it delivers these benefits with no impact on the recoatability, intercoat adhesion, water resistance or surface hardness of the cured coating.

Easy to incorporate in waterborne systems, Dow Corning® 52 Additive is highly effective at low addition levels when used alone or in combination with wax emulsions. This makes it a cost-effective solution for a wide range of coating formulations, including industrial wood coatings, interior and exterior paints, printing inks, and overprint varnishes.

"We work very closely with our customers to ensure that we have a solid understanding of their needs and challenges," said Dow Corning Coatings Global Segment Leader Chris Wall. "This enables us to focus our silicone expertise and innovation capabilities on those areas that have the greatest relevance for them – and the greatest potential impact on their market success."

Supporting customers in the Asia-Pacific Region

According to Paint Coatings Industry Magazine, the Asia-Pacific region was the world's leading consumer of coatings in 2013, accounting for 45 percent of the volume and 40 percent of the value.

"Drawing upon global and regional resources, such as Dow Corning's Singapore-based Science and Technology facility, enables us to improve not only our coatings solutions, but also customer service and satisfaction across the region," Wall said. "The Singapore facility connects Dow Corning and our ASEAN/ANZ customers in a way that facilitates collaboration and expedites the innovation of high-performing, sustainable and cost-effective silicone-based solutions for the region."
