Press release date: January 28, 2008

January 28, 2008 - Ewing, NJ - Discovery Semiconductors, Inc. has demonstrated the effectiveness of its 10Gb/s DPSK coherent receiver system "Kitty Hawk" in combination with an electronic dispersion compensator. An extended reach of 300km over G.652 (standard single-mode) fiber was obtained. This is the longest G.652 transmission at 10.7Gb/s that does not depend on optical dispersion compensation and optical in-line amplifiers. A total link loss of 60dB was overcome spanning 300km of SSMF. Dr. Christoph Wree, the program manager at DSC said, "10G systems at 1550nm can typically reach up to 80km. Usually, for distances beyond that optical in-line amplifiers and dispersion compensation modules become necessary and increase the cost of the network significantly."

Mr. Abhay Joshi, President/CEO of Discovery Semiconductors, added, "The extended reach of 10Gb/s up to 300km provides unique opportunities to the service providers. CapEx and OpEx for metro networks as well as repeaterless submarine links can be substantially reduced." Mr. Joshi continued, "Due to content redistribution and caching, most internet traffic growth is expected within a metro area up to 300km. To keep up with this growth, a quick and cost-effective solution is necessary. "Kitty Hawk" using DPSK and EDC may just be the answer to these technical and business challenges."

Discovery Semiconductors is an industry leader in manufacturing ultrafast, high optical power handling InGaAs photodiodes, radio frequency over fiber optical receivers, balanced optical receivers and several other custom products for applications ranging from analog RF links to ultrafast digital communications. Discovery's subsystems include Kitty Hawk, an ultra-fast Optical Coherent System.
