Press release date: May 14, 2009

St. Louis, MO (USA) -- Let's face it, in a perfect world, galvanizing steel poles will provide a good level of protection against corrosion and pole failure. Unfortunately, this is an imperfect world. Before the pole leaves the factory, scratches, dents and ding will quickly compromise the zinc galvanizing and lead to pre-mature failure.

To help prevent damage and protect the pole during transportation and installation, CHEMLINE offers a direct-to-metal, spray-applied (1:1 mix), fast set, polyurethane, CHEMTHANE 2260. The 100% solids (Zero VOC) coating is applied in a single coat, multi-pass application directly to a prepared substrate. No primer is required. This information is according to John Henningsen, spokesperson for the company.

"The addition of 18-40 mils of polyurethane coating will significantly extend the poles service life," commented Mr. Henningsen. CHEMTHANE 2260 is applied to grit-blasted (2 mil profile) galvanized and weathering steel for ground level protection against corrosion or mechanical impact. What might seem to be small surface damage to the outer layer of zinc galvanizing; could actually be a corrosion problem in the making. "CHEMTHANE 2260 eliminates the formation of corrosion due to scratched galvanizing during transportation and installation," added Henningsen.

High impact strength and abrasion resistance is required while the pole is being installed. In the case of CHEMTHANE 2260, this is expressed in a Shore D hardness of 75. Another reason that impact strength is so important is that the ground is subject to movement in response to changes in the amount of moisture. CHEMTHANE 2260 also provides good microbe and chemical resistance to prevent the development of corrosion in steel.

Since steel and galvanized steel poles are uses in every environment around the world, the coatings must be able to be applied in temperatures from 35 - 120°F (1 - 49°C). With a broad temperature application range, resistance to abrasion and cathodic disbondment, CHEMTHANE 2260 has bond strength of 2000+ psi to grit blasted galvanized steel.

CHEMTHANE 2260 contains no solvents and is applied using a two-component system. Since it has not solvents, CHEMTHANE 2260 is more environmentally friendly than solvent-based systems and it cures faster. This is particularly important when the coating is applied at low temperatures. CHEMTHANE 2260 cures within 3-5 minutes at 75°F (24°C). The coating is less vulnerable to surface contamination that can jeopardize a freshly applied coating.
