Did You Know? offers a quick look at the broad scope of activities underway within the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Federation, highlighting the people and initiatives making waves in standardization.

ASTM Announces New Leadership Program

ASTM International, an ANSI member and audited designator, has initiated a new initiative, “Leadership Connection,” which seeks to provide educational resources to individuals interested in standardization and other related activities. As part of the initiative, ASTM has created a new section of its website, providing articles on successful career strategies for standards professionals and the importance of standards to business growth and corporate results, and a new mentoring program, pairing new ASTM members with longtime participants in the ASTM Technical Committee process.

ASSE Releases Free Anti-Scalding Brochure and Water Temperature Indicator

The American Society of Sanitary Engineering (ASSE), an ANSI organizational member and accredited standards developer, has announced the release of a new brochure and hot water gauge free of charge as part of an effort to reduce the threat posed by scalding water in baths and showers. The brochure provides parents and other concerned individuals with information about the risks posed by scalding bathwater and tips for addressing likely hazards, as well as information about the threat posed by legionella pnuemphillia bacteria, which can thrive in domestic hot water systems. The hot water indicator – which features the image of “Tommy Temperature,” a cartoon turtle – includes a liquid crystal display (LCD) that, when dipped in bathwater or the spray of a shower, reads either “HOT,” indicating potential scalding, or “OK,” indicating a safe temperature.

To request the free brochure and temperature gauge, call 440-835-3040 or email general.info@asse-plumbing.org.

The internship includes a housing allowance and relocation expenses, as well as a $5,000 stipend.

The internship is open to graduate students who have finished at least two years of doctoral level coursework and have at least a basic knowledge of item response theory and classic test theory. All applications are due Friday, February 8, 2013.
