AIA Welcomes Specifics of Defense Department Efficiency Measures

Statement by AIA President & CEO Marion C. Blakey on further development of the Defense Department's Initiative to Boost Efficiency and Productivity

Arlington, Va. - Today's announcement by Secretary Gates on obtaining greater efficiency and productivity in defense spending contains some welcome measures toward developing more open and efficient acquisition procedures.

We are particularly encouraged by Secretary Gates' and Undersecretary Carter's express attention to the partnership between government and industry and "managing together to a new era." The ongoing meetings between top-level defense officials and company CEOs are a crucial tool in this process.

While we have questions regarding some of the proposals, we are confident that the cooperation between government and industry as these initiatives are developed and implemented will produce results that will benefit all stakeholders-most importantly, the warfighter and taxpayer.

We look forward to continuing to work with the department on these initiatives as well as some of AIA's more far-reaching proposals. These include rationalizing government and contractor infrastructure, increasing use of performance- and outcome-based product support strategies and eliminating low-priority and redundant government services or activities and consolidating shared services.
