Davis-Standard, Killion Specialty Systems
1 Extrusion Dr.
Pawcatuck, CT, 06379
USA

Press release date: March 18, 2009

March 18, 2009

(Pawcatuck, Conn.)--During NPE, Davis-Standard, LLC will exhibit examples of laboratory equipment that provide customers with cost-effective R&D solutions. These include the small, but powerful Killion KLT extruder and a laboratory-size blown film line. Davis-Standard will also provide information about JMC Killion Laboratories in Houston, Texas.

The Killion KLT extruder is back at NPE for the first time in 18 years. This extruder has been widely used for many applications and is an excellent solution for cost-conscious customers. It is available as a ½-inch (12mm) and ¾-inch (19mm) extruder with L/D's from 5:1 to 30:1. The footprint of this machine is so small that it can fit into the trunk of a car. Visitors will have to look hard to find the diminutive KLT on Davis-Standard's expansive booth.

"In keeping with these recessionary times, we want to remind customers of solutions that can save money while enabling them to continue their R&D efforts," said Simon Dominey, Business Manager of Davis-Standard's Killion and Specialty Systems Business Group. "Surprisingly, we have seen many companies pushing ahead with R&D despite cut backs. We want to offer them the best options available for their investment."

The laboratory blown film line being exhibited will feature an HPE extruder, spiral mandrel die, KXP high performance air ring and a simple, low-cost winder. This line is geared toward R&D or quality control processes. At the show, it will include some high-end features as well as those focused on cost efficiency. Davis-Standard also plans to run the line periodically for demonstrations. Polymers being processed at the show are not being revealed at this time, but something interesting is promised.

In addition, Davis-Standard will promote the availability of extrusion development capabilities at JMC Killion Laboratories. The lab, a partnership between Davis-Standard and Jorgenson Machinery Corporation, has seen a continual increase in lab utilization and inquiries since opening in 2005. Customers from across the U.S., Europe and South America have come to run product trials in the areas of sheet, blown film, cast film, compounding and other processes. The lab houses Davis-Standard Killion equipment and systems, film gauges, tensile testers, melt indexers, gel counters, analytical systems and more. Examples of recent projects include developments with biopolymers, solar energy, high efficiency batteries, special coatings and radiation shielding. Jorgenson Machinery and Perkin Elmer have also set up an analytical instrument area in the lab to more accurately analyze the results of extrusion trials and provide additional services to customers. In addition to the Houston operation, there are lab facilities at Davis-Standard's plants in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey, and at Davis-Standard GmbH's plant in Germany.
