DOC Internet Policy Task Force Calls for Comments on Privacy Laws and Innovation in the Information Economy
The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) would like to inform all members and constituents that the Department of Commerce's (DOC) Internet Policy Task Force seeks public comments on the impact of current domestic and global privacy laws on the pace of innovation in the information economy.
"Because of the vital role the Internet plays in driving innovation throughout the economy, the Department has made it a top priority to ensure that the Internet remains open for innovation while promoting an environment respectful of individual privacy expectations," said U.S. Commerce Secretary Gary Locke.
DOC has issued a Federal Register notice detailing its request for comments. Input from all stakeholders, including those from the commercial, academic, and civil society sectors, will be accepted until June 7, 2010. Written comments may be submitted by mail to the National Telecommunications Administration at U.S. Department of Commerce, 1401 Constitution Avenue, NW, Room 4725, Washington, DC 20230. Online submissions in electronic form may be sent to privacy-noi-2010@ntia.doc.gov. Submissions may be in any of the following formats: HTML, ASCII, Word, rtf, or pdf.
After analyzing the comments received by the June 7 deadline, the DOC plans to issue a report that will contribute to the Administration's domestic policy and international engagement in the area of Internet privacy.

The mission of the Internet Policy Task Force is to identify key public policy and operational challenges in the Internet environment. The Task Force leverages expertise across many bureaus at the DOC, including those responsible for domestic and international information and communications technology policy, international trade, cybersecurity standards and best practices, intellectual property, business advocacy, and export control.
This call for comments is the first in a series of inquiries from the Task Force; similar reviews of cybersecurity, global free flow of information goods and services, and online copyright protection issues are forthcoming and will be publicized on the Task Force website.
