Crossbeam X-Series Unified Threat Management is the Preferred Security Platform for Today's Converged Networks

BARCELONA, Spain and BOXBOROUGH, Mass., Feb. 12 // -- Crossbeam Systems(R), Inc., the leader in unified threat management (UTM) for the world's largest networks, today announced that its X-Series UTM security switches are securing critical carrier infrastructure covering more than 800 million residential and enterprise subscribers of mobile, broadband and telephony networks worldwide.

In the United States, Crossbeam UTM devices are deployed in more than 80 percent of service provider networks, including three of the top four mobile operators and all of the regional Bell operating companies. Internationally, Crossbeam UTM devices are providing security for the world's largest, next- generation converged networks, reaching nearly 800 million residential and managed service subscribers in more than 50 countries.

"In networks around the globe, stacks of traditional security appliances are being ripped out and replaced by a consolidated Crossbeam-powered security service layer that is transforming traditional telecom networks," said Throop Wilder, co-founder, Crossbeam Systems. "This new layer of security equipment is called Unified Threat Management (UTM) and it adapts dynamically to the fast-changing requirements of the converging service provider infrastructure."

The traditional approach to service-provider security has focused on securing the edge of the network. But with the convergence of voice, video, data and wireless services over one IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), security risks will continue to increase dramatically. Spyware, malware, worms and viruses previously isolated to the Internet or wireless networks will pose a threat to previously secure cable and wireline networks, while the proliferation of free public networks like WiFi and WiMAX further exposes network vulnerabilities to a much wider audience. Additionally, these converged networks are at risk for denial of service attacks, spoofing and theft of service.

Crossbeam service provider customers are adopting a more comprehensive approach to securing their networks - one that does not focus on point or edge security, but rather provides a flexible, consolidated security services layer that begins at the network core. Crossbeam UTM technology provides a highly consolidated, security services solution that allows service providers to deploy the most appropriate security measures precisely where they are needed most.

"A major change in requirements - from tactical to strategic solutions - is coming. This change is being driven by changes in the nature of threats enterprises face, as well as by different types of technologies, including "suite" offerings that increasingly replace point solutions and 'in the cloud' offerings from service providers," according to a November, 2006 Gartner report: "Predicts 2007: Infrastructure Protection Key to Information Security Market's Future."

Crossbeam Systems UTM platforms are failure tolerant and execute best-of- breed applications, including firewall, anti-virus, content management and IDS/IPS. Crossbeam UTM solutions couple best-in-class security applications with high-performance, purpose-built network security hardware. The end result is massive appliance consolidation, eliminating up to 100 separate devices per Crossbeam security switch, and the ability to build defense in depth infrastructures at a reasonable cost.
