Architects who design new firehouses need to consider an element that is critical to the health and well-being of firefighters. Diesel-powered vehicles operated in firehouse bay areas release toxic gases and particulate that are known to cause cancer. An Exhaust Removal System needs to be incorporated into planning to eliminate those diesel fumes and reduce the serious threat to firefighter health. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), diesel exhaust emissions are "known carcinogens" . . . and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) Standard 1500 advocates "elimination and containment of all vehicle exhaust emissions to a level of no less than 100% effective capture."
Firehouse designers can request a comprehensive Engineering Manual that simplifies incorporating an exhaust removal system into plans. Send requests on company letterhead to MagneGrip Group, 11449 Deerfield Road, Cincinnati OH 45242.
