MINNEAPOLIS and HICKORY, N.C., March 26 -- Corning Cable Systems, part of Corning Incorporated's (NYSE:GLW) Telecommunications segment, and the conversion technology and switching expert, Transition Networks Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems, Inc., today announced the addition of Gigabit Ethernet copper-to-fiber media converters to Corning's portfolio of Plug & Play(TM) Universal System products.
The Plug & Play Universal Systems Media Converter Module is the highest- density media converter on the market, enabling network cabling managers to seamlessly and cost-effectively leverage existing copper electronics while taking advantage of the data transport properties of Corning Cable Systems' high-density Plug & Play Optical Fiber Systems.
Corning Cable Systems offers the broadest range of end-to-end fiber optic product solutions for customers' telecommunications networks, and the company pioneered pre-terminated solutions for enterprise networks with its Plug & Play Factory-Terminated Systems. Transition Networks makes conversion between disparate media types possible by providing conversion technology solutions that offer the necessary adaptations without affecting the performance, nature or appearance of the network. Product Configuration
The Media Converter Module is a Gigabit Ethernet media conversion solution in a Plug & Play Universal Systems footprint. The Media Converter Module, with 12 RJ-45 copper ports on the front and two 12-fiber MTP(R) Connector ports at the rear, is the highest-density media conversion solution on the market today. Just like traditional Plug & Play Systems modules, the 12-port Media Converter Module fits into Corning Cable Systems hardware. Up to two Media Converter Modules can be placed into the 1-rack-unit (1U) housing, offering 24-copper-port density, and up to eight modules can be placed into the 4-rack- unit (4U) housing for 96-copper-port density. The Media Converter Housing, while offering the same footprint as a standard Corning Pretium(TM) Rack- Mountable Housing, offers additional features for the Media Converter Modules, including a specially designed area for the power supply units and easy routing of the power cords. For continuous uptime, the solution offers front- mounted redundant power supplies.
Corning's Plug & Play Universal Systems allows customers to use less space for their cabling and eliminate heat and air flow problems that copper cabling can generate. Because the components of the system are modular, moves, adds and changes are fast and simple, enabling pay-as-you-grow scalability and lowering the total cost of network ownership.
