Press release date: June 27, 2007

Broward County, Fla (USA) GE Security has deployed it's CommerceGuard container security system at the Port Everglades Terminal, located at Florida's Port Everglades.

CommerceGuard now monitors container security device (CSD)-equipped containers at Port Everglades Terminal, a privately owned terminal at Port Everglades. The system can detect and report intrusion into a container to help ensure the safety of cargo as it travels from point-of-origin to final destination. It does this by integrating high-technology CSDs and a global information network.

CommerceGuard is a solution for global supply chain security that monitors for theft, smuggling, international terrorism and other threats while a container is being transported. The Port handles more than 864,000 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent container units), approximately a half million containers annually, and serves as a major cruise ship destination, making it a high-traffic location of critical importance to the U.S. maritime economy.

"We are excited to extend protection of the Eastern seaboard with Florida's first installation of CommerceGuard," says Richard Rovirosa, CEO and general manager of Port Everglades Terminal, LLC "Port Everglades Terminal has now enhanced its safe and secure working environment while adding CommerceGuard's cargo-container-tracking capabilities to the broad range of services we offer our customers"

"Port Everglades supports the efforts that our terminal operators are making to help protect the cargo transported through the Port. Port Everglades Terminal is a good example of an operator who believes employing technology such as CommerceGuard will play a key role in keeping our port, its workers and the local community safer," says Port Everglades director, Phillip C. Allen.

"CommerceGuard's ability to protect both cargo and ports makes it an essential element in the global supply chain," says Randy Koch, president and CEO, CommerceGuard AB and GM, cargo security, GE Security "By monitoring the container's status and location as it progresses through the supply chain, the CommerceGuard system delivers accurate information about a container's security status, its transportation history, and ultimately advance notification of potential threats"

The CommerceGuard CSD is mounted inside a container as it is being loaded for shipment to monitor for and report on potential en route tampering or damage. While in transit, CSDs communicate securely with fixed and handheld readers. The readers then forward encrypted security and tracking information wirelessly to the global CommerceGuard Information Network where it is accessible by authorized shippers, port authorities and other officials via the Internet. Automated warnings are also routed to appropriate authorities, when warranted.

Port Everglades moves more than 864,000 TEUs, container equivalents representing more than a half million containers, carrying five million tons of cargo per year, carried by 35 different shipping lines. The Port also serves as a major cruise ship destination, making it a high-traffic location of critical importance to the United States' maritime economy. The installation of CommerceGuard at Port Everglades follows recent deployments to other key U.S. and international ports, including the Port of Portland (Ore.), the Port of Virginia and the Port of Antwerp in Belgium.
