Conference on ISO 8000 to Address Data Quality and Data Integration Issues
According to a recent estimate, incorrect and inconsistent data cost American companies more than $600 billion dollars in hard costs each year. But when the loss of frustrated customers and decreased revenue potential are taken into consideration, the real cost of ineffective data management is higher still. The ISO 8000 series of standards from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) seeks to provide guidance on data quality, helping organizations in both the private and public sectors to develop quality data, integrate it into their existing systems, and maintain its continued accuracy.
The first standard in the series, ISO 8000-110:2008, Data quality - Part 110: Master data: Exchange of characteristic data: Syntax, semantic encoding, and conformance to data specification, defines the basic requirements that need to be met to ensure the quality of "master data," or data that describes individuals, organizations, locations, goods, and services. Specifically, the standard deals with those data attributes that can be verified by a computer program, simplifying the data management process for organizations that may be checking millions of individual records.
In an effort to increase stakeholder understanding of data quality and data integration issues, the Electronic Commerce Code Management Association (ECCMA) has announced that it will host the first conference on the ISO 8000 series of standards on October 15-16, 2008.
ECCMA, an organizational member of the American National Standards Institute (ANSI), will bring together over twenty government and industry speakers for the two-day conference. Presentations and discussions will be focused on the ISO 8000 series of standards and the challenges and the rewards of developing and managing data quality.
One day prior to the conference, ECCMA will offer a technical short course on ECCMA ISO 8000-110:2008 Master Data Quality Manager Certification.

The ISO 8000 series of standards is being developed by ISO Technical Committee (TC) 184, Subcommittee (SC) 4, Industrial Data. The U.S. holds the secretariat for this SC, which ANSI has delegated to the Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA). ECCMA is the ANSI-accredited U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG) Administrator to SC 4, carrying U.S. positions forward to the subcommittee.
