CommAgility and MIMOon Announce Complete LTE Physical Layer Solution

Integrated hardware and software saves time and money for wireless OEMs

Loughborough, UK and Duisburg, Germany – CommAgility, a developer of signal processing hardware for wireless and other applications, and MIMOon GmbH, a software vendor for LTE small cells and terminals, today announced that MIMOon’s mi!SmallCellPHY software will be fully integrated and tested with CommAgility’s AMC-D24A4-RF4 AdvancedMC module, creating a complete LTE physical layer solution ready to add L2/L3 stacks. It is ideal for LTE applications including eNodeB implementations, test equipment, specialised systems and research and development projects.

The PHY software is supplied in binary format integrated with the card, and no up-front licence fee is charged, only a run-time license. This typically saves hundreds of thousands of dollars for OEMs developing LTE applications, making new projects more affordable. By being already integrated and tested, the solution saves substantial engineering effort, further reducing development costs and enabling OEMs to deliver projects more quickly.

MIMOon’s mi!SmallCellPHY software provides a complete LTE physical layer for pico-, femto, and micro-cells on SDR, DSP and ASIC platforms. The software is fully compliant with 3GPP Releases 8 and 9, and provides a flexible, scalable solution that is optimised for low memory, processing power and power consumption.

CommAgility’s AMC-D24A4-RF4 is a double-width AMC module based around Texas Instruments’ (TI’s) TMS320TCI6636 SoC, which contains 8 TMS320C66x DSP cores, 4 ARM® Cortex®-A15 cores and wireless accelerators. For additional processing, the AMC-D24A4-RF4 also provides two TI TMS320C6678 multicore DSPs and a Xilinx Kintex-7 FPGA. The module includes a highly flexible 4x4 RF interface. For applications requiring external remote radio heads, multiple CPRI interfaces are available, and the card is available without integrated RF as the AMC-D24A4.

The module is aimed at 4G LTE, LTE Advanced and 5G systems that require MIMO technologies, and enables complete RF to Layer 3 wireless basestation functionality to be implemented on a single card. The performance and flexibility is ideal for use in test equipment, research and development, or a specialized application such as wireless surveillance.

Brian Meads, VP Marketing at MIMOon, said, “By combining the MIMOon PHY and CommAgility’s signal processing hardware into a pre-integrated solution, developers can save time and money in creating new LTE systems. LTE Small Cell product developers can further take advantage of MIMOon’s pre-integrated mi!SmallCellSTACK to realize a product with lowest risk and fastest time-to-market.”

Edward Young, Managing Director at CommAgility, said, “We are very excited to announce this new partnership, which for the first time brings together MIMOon’s software expertise and field-proven code with CommAgility’s powerful RF and signal processing hardware, to help wireless OEMs start their development confidently with a fully tested platform.”

The CommAgility hardware and MIMOon software now provide one of the key building blocks for an eNodeB solution, ready for integration with higher layer stacks and other components. Renuka Bhalerao, Senior Product Line Manager, Small Cells and Trillum Software, at Radisys, said, “CommAgility’s advanced wireless hardware based on the TCI6636 SoC makes an ideal standard platform for our market leading TotaleNodeB software solution, which provides the rest of the functionality for a typical eNodeB system.”

The new solution will be available in mid 2014. For further details and pricing, please contact CommAgility.
