Columbia Marking Tools, Inc.
27430 Luckino
Chesterfield, MI, 48047
USA

Press release date: May 17, 2006

On January 1, 2007, all components and parts purchased by the U.S. Department of Defense must be marked with Unique Identification (UID) two-dimensional matrix codes. These are Data Matrix ECC200 symbols, Fig. 1, and must comply with Specification MIL-STD-130L. In anticipation of this requirement, Columbia Marking Tools, Inc., North America's leading supplier of machines and systems for applying 2D Matrix codes has established a new web site, www.cmt-uid.com, to assist manufacturers, especially those supplying the Department of Defense, in understanding the requirements and the type of equipment that is available to apply 2D Matrix codes.

In 2005, Columbia Marking Tools, Inc. was granted a patent for their UID Square ◙ DotŪ programmable high-speed CNC scribe marking machine technology that mark Square ◙ DotŪ 2D codes with Grade "A" readability and verifiability by 2D barcode scanners. More specifically, the cmt-uid.com web site provides detailed information about: o What Department of Defense parts should be marked o What marking technology to use o What information belongs on the 2D marks o Where to put the 2D mark o How to validate and verify the 2D mark

Tom Phipps, Columbia Marking Tools CEO says, " Unique Identification (UID) 2D codes provide tremendous traceability opportunities, because the matrix permits much more information to be provided in a small area, where bar codes have limitations. This is the primary reason why the Department of Defense has standardized on the code, and why we are seeing the same technology finding increased application in other industries like automotive, aerospace and appliance. This is the primary reason why we established the new web site to better familiarize industry with the concept and the processes involved in applying and verifying 2D codes."

Columbia Marking Tools is a leading designer and manufacturer of metal and plastic marking equipment including stamps, roll marking dies, roll marking and impact marking machines, fully programmable peen/scribe marking and UID Square ◙ DotŪ machines, numbering heads and special marking machines.
