Clean Winner at High-flex Cartoning, Criterion® 2000 'Servoes Up'

R.A. Jones & Co. Inc. servoes up savings and major productivity gains in high-throughput, high-flex cartoning with its 3rd-generation, servo-driven Criterion 2000 family of cartoners. Documented at reducing changeovers and machine downtime, the product family is represented at Pack Expo booth # 1213/1512 by an intermittent motion Criterion 2000 configured with a Jones high-speed bar transfer system and an advanced Inex vision system.

The fully servo driven 3rd-generation system greatly reduces mechanical complexity, providing significant reductions in delivery time and operational costs for the Criterion 2000 vs. previous generation mechanical designs. Documented in-plant studies against a comparable mechanical model found that the Criterion 2000 reduced changeover times and overall downtime from machine stops, sanitation and scheduled maintenance.

Available in both constant and intermittent motion models on 6", 9", 12" and 15" centers, the Jones clean machines feature debris fall-through design, unitized stainless steel construction, and sanitary washdown capability. The washdown design expands the application range for the Criterion 2000, particularly to the dairy, frozen, and chilled foods industries.

The Criterion 2000 family of machines are equipped with fully integrated servo systems using advanced motion control, electronic line shafting and SERCOS fiber optic networks, all of which eliminate complex mechanical drive systems while providing high reliability, predictable operations and minimal maintenance. The Criterion 2000 features an advanced control system with color touch screen HMI, system diagnostics and servo performance monitoring with predictive (vs reactive) maintenance capabilities. Jones offers integrated motion/control systems from global sources such as Allen Bradley or Siemens/Indramat to meet the preferences of customers worldwide.
Offering fast, repeatable changeovers, the Criterion 2000s can accommodate a wide range of chipboard and corrugated cartons utilizing Jones patented feed systems. Optionally the machine can be configured with a high efficiency air opening system to accommodate those hard to open or thinner cartons.

Ergonomic studies drove the operator-friendly design of the Criterion 2000. The sleek curvilinear shape, combines a low-profile base with lift-up gull-wing guarding. The result is unmatched machine access and operator ergonomics. Clear view, easy open guarding provides full access to the machine interior and avoids the impingement on aisle space of conventional swing-out doors while providing at-a-glance check of machine operation.

Open, fall-through design speeds and simplifies sanitation. The machine bases along with the carton forming and filling areas of the machine features integral sanitary chutes that direct fall-through material to the outside for ease of cleaning. In the documented in-plant performance evaluation, the downtime for cleaning was dramatically reduced, resulting in an increase for output time.
Modular design allows configuration to order with economics of standardization, rather than engineering to order per traditional packaging machinery practices. Rigid unitized construction enables base sections to ship as one piece for speedy installation and start-up in customer plants.
