Press release date: August 11, 2011

NORWELL, MA - August 11, 2011 - Clean Harbors, North America's leading provider of environmental, energy and industrial services, has published a management brief on optimizing disaster preparedness and disaster responsiveness for chemical, chemical specialty and petrochemical industries. Part of the company's chemical services information campaign, the brief is an overview of how hazmat responders can prepare for emergency events.

Entitled "Optimizing Disaster Planning for Refineries and Chemical & Specialty Plants," the brief discusses the three phases of any disaster program - Preparation, Response and Recovery. It also presents the company's approach to the Incident Command Response (ICS) model and support for contingency planning for chemical and specialty chemical plants and refineries. It recommends tabletop rehearsals and mock drills with first responders, as well as standby emergency response agreements with key service providers.

The brief is designed to be an overview of the disaster preparedness topic and serves as a facilitator for discussions to encourage management to consider all of the facets of disaster planning and the range of required services from sludge and sediment removal to drum disposal, decontamination and remediation services.

"Disaster planning for chemical, specialty chemical and petroleum process manufacturers has to be front and center every day," said Scott Metzger, Senior Vice President for Emergency Services at Clean Harbors and author of the brief. "It involves management, employees, emergency responders, suppliers, service contractors and the community at large. It is something that must be fully analyzed and scripted well in advance."

The management brief is available at: http://www.cleanharbors.com/disaster-brief.
