Ciena Appoints Bruce L. Claflin To Board


LINTHICUM, Md.--Aug. 31, 2006--Ciena Corporation (Nasdaq:CIEN), today announced that Bruce L. Claflin, former President and Chief Executive Officer of 3Com Corporation, has joined the Company's Board of Directors.

Mr. Claflin was Chief Executive Officer of 3Com from January 2001 until his retirement in February 2006. During his tenure as CEO, Mr. Claflin repositioned 3Com as a leading provider of secure, converged networking products and services, targeted to enterprise customers. Prior to joining 3Com in 1998 as President and Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Claflin was Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Digital Equipment Corporation. He joined Digital Equipment after 22 years with IBM Corporation, during which he held a number of senior positions both in the United States and overseas.

Mr. Claflin, 54, received his B.A. in political science from Pennsylvania State University in 1973. In 2003, Mr. Claflin was named a Distinguished Alumnus of Penn State, its highest honor for lifetime achievements. Mr. Claflin also serves on the board of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) where he chairs the Compensation Committee and serves on the Audit and Nominating and Corporate Governance Committees.
