'Energy for Learning' to Provide Resources to Hurricane-affected Public Schools in Mississippi and Louisiana
BATON ROUGE, La., and PASCAGOULA, Miss., June 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Chevron (NYSE:CVX) today announced the launch of Energy for Learning, an $18 million program to support public school education in 23 Louisiana and Mississippi school districts affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
"Public school education is crucial to the social and economic vitality of communities and it is our hope that the Energy for Learning program will help communities in Louisiana and Mississippi grow stronger than ever," said Dave O'Reilly, chairman and CEO of Chevron Corporation. "Energy for Learning is an investment in the future of students in Louisiana and Mississippi affected by the hurricanes and our 4,700 employees there who manage our diverse operations."
Following consultation with the respective district and state superintendents of education in Louisiana and Mississippi, Energy for Learning has been developed to address the education priorities of 23 school districts by equipping public schools with academic materials and technology such as science labs and I.T. equipment, as well as reinstating student programs that help develop physical and personal skills. Energy for Learning also will provide support for the restoration of child-care facilities in Mississippi, replicating Chevron's successful Daycare Restoration Project in the state, where Chevron restored 40 child-care centers damaged by Hurricane Katrina.
Dr. Hank Bounds, Mississippi states superintendent of education, commented, "The program is a demonstration of the value of partnerships with companies such as Chevron, which has proactively engaged us in addressing the education needs in the region and was a leader in restoring child-care centers immediately after Katrina struck. Energy for Learning will help us meet the physical, emotional and developmental needs of Mississippi's youngest children, and at the same time, enhance K-12 academic achievement. It's great for Mississippi to have a business partner that understands the significance of how these issues are all connected."

In developing Energy for Learning, Chevron has identified non profit organizations in each state with the capacity to assist in program implementation. In Louisiana, which will receive $12 million, Chevron will work with the Greater New Orleans Foundation and the Community Foundation of Acadiana. In Mississippi, which will receive $6 million, Chevron will work with Save the Children and Rebuild Jackson County.
Chevron's $18 million Energy for Learning program is in addition to a pledge of $8 million made in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina to aid short-term relief and reconstruction, and a $1 million education grants program currently under way in New Orleans.
