ESB Platform Leader Supports Rapid Go Live
LONDON, Dec. 11 // - Channel 4, a terrestrial public service broadcaster, has selected Cape Clear(R) Software, the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) Platform leader, as the integration platform to power its new PC-based Video-on-Demand (VOD) services. As the first broadcaster to launch a comprehensive video-on-demand service, Channel 4 has delivered an ESB Platform deployment that will scale to manage more than a quarter-of-a-million digital assets. The rapid delivery of this project, utilizing a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) and only a small internal development team demonstrates the proven performance of an ESB Platform-approach to enable SOA.
1/3 of the World's TV Viewing Audience Projected to Use VOD
Channel 4 has been a consistent innovator throughout the revolution in the television industry. As such, VOD is an integral part of Channel 4's commercial strategy. The new service - to be made available via televisions and PCs - will include all commissioned programming and the best of acquired programming available. Viewers will be able to download films, previews, and catch-up episodes and archive programmes. According to recent research from analyst house Informa Media and Telecoms, by the end of the decade, one-third of the world's TV viewing households will be using VOD services.
"There is a revolution taking place in broadcasting. More and more, people expect to be able watch what they want, when they want," said Annrai O'Toole, CEO, Cape Clear Software. "This means that it is imperative that media companies rely on an IT infrastructure that can be quickly and easily deployed, yet is reliable, highly scalable and can deliver proven performance. With one of the world's largest ESB Platform deployments, Cape Clear's is proving to be the ESB Platform of choice for broadcasters worldwide."
Unified ESB Platform Toolset Enables Rapid Deployment
Cape Clear was selected to manage the lifecycle of video assets within the PC VOD platform - each sized up to a gigabyte - from internal Channel 4 storage through to distribution. Cape Clear's open-standards approach, unified toolset, and ability to work with Channel 4's existing technology environment enabled Channel 4's small team of developers to deliver the project in the extremely aggressive timeframe.
"We selected Cape Clear's ESB Platform for our PC VOD services because it met our technical criteria and supported the tight project deadlines required if we wish to stay ahead of our competitors during this industry shift," explained Bob Harris, responsible for IT strategy and architecture at Channel 4. "Working closely with Cape Clear, we were able to implement new processes in BPEL to manage the publication of content to our PC VOD platform."
Business Process Execution Language (BPEL) for Web services is an XML-based standard that facilitates designing, defining, implementing, and deploying composite applications and services from a number of distributed and autonomous software components. The ability to design, deploy and manage BPEL-based processes is a key feature of Cape Clear's ESB Platform.
