Press release date: March 13, 2009

March 13, 2009 (Lithia, Florida) - Attended by Central Maintenance & Welding (CMW) and over 70 professionals from industry, the 2009 North American Sulfuric Acid Roundtable was held March 10-12, 2009 in Galveston, Texas.

Among other speakers, CMW delivered a paper and presentation on "Major Equipment Replacements, Making the Right Decisions." Delivered by Chris Pearson, Director of Engineering and David Bailey, Sulfuric Acid Turnaround Project Manager for CMW, the presentation focused on providing useful information on how to execute major capital projects without costing any more than necessary. A central thesis revolved around comprehensive planning and scheduling prior to an actual turnaround event followed by superior project execution.

Using two common scenarios with an acid tower and converter replacement, CMW illustrated several key steps that must be carefully followed over an 18 to 24 month timeline. This included choosing a technology provider, choosing a contractor, ordering long lead-time items, planning and construction, and finally the actual demolition and installation stages of the project.

By following a thorough upfront planning process, narrow windows of opportunity with production downtime can be optimized to achieve a successful major equipment replacement in a relatively short period of time. Of course, as always, CMW stressed that all of this incorporates the utmost focus on safety throughout.
