Press release date: December 3, 2009

LaSalle/Peru, IL - A stretch of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal near Lockport, IL, is the site of a massive Asian Carp fish kill, and a liquid product manufactured by Carus is playing an integral role in the project. Asian Carp are an invasive species that feed on the low end of the food chain. The carp are a major concern because they compete for food with native species by eating 40% of their body weight per day. They can reach weights as high as 100 pounds and 4 feet in length. They are aggressive, destructive, and difficult to capture using typical angling methods. Locally, they are very a common sight in the Illinois River.

This week the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is coordinating the largest kill of Asian Carp in an effort to prevent the fish species from reaching Lake Michigan. A fish toxin called Rotenone is being added to a 5.5- mile stretch of the shipping canal near Lockport to kill the fish. Rotenone creates a chemical reaction in fish that shuts down their ability to produce oxygen through their gills, causing them to die. The reaction is fast, and experts expect to see carcasses of thousands of fish within hours of the application. Rotenone degrades fairly quickly in the water, but to make sure it does not move downstream from the targeted area, a product manufactured by Carus Corporation in LaSalle is being added to destroy any residual Rotenone. For this application, the product CARUSOL® liquid permanganate was used, and a number of Carus employees were at the canal assisting with the application of the product. John Boll, Technical Development Manager of Carus, is working on-site with the IDNR, and he stated "Carus employees will assist with feeding our product at 8 locations along the canal, including loading onto boats for application on the canal. The main dosage point will be at the end of the ship canal. Historically, the aquaculture industry has recognized CARUSOL® as the most effective means of destroying Rotenone."

Carus Corporation, founded in LaSalle, IL in 1915, is an environmental company that manufactures permanganates, phosphates, and catalysts for the Water, Remediation, and Industrial markets for environmental applications.
