BOCA RATON, Fla., Feb. 8 // -- Eclipsys Corporation(R) (NASDAQ:ECLP), The Outcomes Company(R), today announced that the Calgary Health Region, Alberta, Canada has successfully activated Eclipsys Sunrise Clinical Manager at all of its adult care facilities, improving the quality, safety and efficiency of care delivered to more than 1.2 million people living in Calgary and the surrounding areas.
The Calgary Health Region engaged Eclipsys Consulting Group to co-develop an implementation strategy focused on achieving 100 percent computerized physician order entry (CPOE) within 18 months of activation. After just a few weeks following the activation of Sunrise Clinical Manager at the first of the three sites, 72 percent of orders by Regional staff physicians and 90 percent of orders by resident physicians were being placed directly using the Eclipsys system.
This documented success is the result of collaboration between physicians, nurses, allied health and other professionals from Calgary Regional facilities. These multi-disciplinary team members participated in the system design and implementation process, and built order sets based on clinician consensus to reduce variance across care delivery practices, and establishing standard procedures for excellence in care delivery. The high percentage of physicians already using the order sets in Sunrise Clinical Manager has enabled the Region to standardize its care delivery and accelerate achievement of Regional and Provincial quality improvement initiatives.
"This implementation of Sunrise Clinical Manager was driven by our clinicians as we felt that was the key to implementing a system that would improve care delivery and promise high rates of solution adoption," said Tom Rosenal, Medical Director, Clinical Informatics, Calgary Health Region. "Eclipsys served as a great partner in the development and execution of our strategy, ensuring this phase of the project was completed in a timely and cost-effective manner. Our initial success with physician adoption confirms that we took the right approach."
The Calgary Health Region and Eclipsys also engaged in extensive training to ensure that end users were comfortable with the solution. Over a period of 5 months, 12,000 users in the Region were trained on Sunrise Clinical Manager.
"Eclipsys' experience implementing systems in high-acuity, complex care environments and the Region's commitment to clinician involvement and physician adoption proved to be a winning formula for a successful activation at one of the largest health care authorities in Canada," said R. Andrew Eckert, Eclipsys president and chief executive officer. "Additionally, the success of this activation demonstrates that both our professional services methodology and clinical information technology can effectively scale to meet the needs of a large healthcare system."
"Working with the exceptional implementation team at Calgary Health Region was a very rewarding experience for Eclipsys' professional services," said Frank Stearns, senior vice president, Professional Services. "With more than 100 successful Sunrise Clinical Manager activations in the past year, Eclipsys now has a large body of work to reference as we refine our services methodology to further reduce time to value and improved patient-care outcomes for Calgary Health Region and other Sunrise Clinical Manager clients."
Eckert added, "As Sunrise Clinical Manager continues to gain increased acceptance in Canada, this successful activation represents an important milestone for Eclipsys in this key market."
