Dr. Julie Gerberding to give keynote speech June 9 in Atlanta

(Denver, CO) - Dr. Julie Gerberding, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will discuss water professionals' role in protecting public health during a keynote address at the American Water Works Association's Annual Conference & Exposition (ACE08) at 9 a.m., June 9, in Atlanta, Georgia.

As one of the leading public health experts in the world, Gerberding will speak about the ways that the drinking water and medical communities can work together to help increase public knowledge of the science of water. She also will discuss the wide scope of work being done at CDC to prevent waterborne disease.

"The presence of Dr. Gerberding at the ACE08 opening general session really underscores that public health protection is the first and most important obligation of water professionals," said AWWA Executive Director Gary Zimmerman.

Gerberding, who also serves as CDC's Administrator of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), played a major role in leading CDCs response to the anthrax bioterrorism events of 2001 before being named director in 2002. Prior to coming to CDC, Dr. Gerberding was a faculty member at the University of California at San Francisco (UCSF) and directed the Prevention Epicenter, a multidisciplinary research, training, and clinical service program that focused on preventing infections in patients and their healthcare providers. Dr. Gerberding is a Clinical Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at Emory University and an Associate Professor of Medicine (Infectious Diseases) at UCSF.
