CAW President Buzz Hargrove to Keynote Canadian Manufacturing Week

TORONTO, ONT., CANADA, July 7, 2008 - The Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) announced today that Canadian Auto Workers Union President Buzz Hargrove will deliver a keynote address on Tuesday, September 23, 2008, 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the International Centre in Mississauga, ON, CAN. The often controversial union leader's speech will be a cornerstone event during SME's Canadian Manufacturing Week scheduled through September 25, 2008.

Canadian Manufacturing Week is Canada's definitive showcase for manufacturing's in-demand technologies and is an essential gathering place for the nation's manufacturing decision-makers. The arrival of this event comes at a time when Canada, one of the world's wealthiest nations, is searching for its competitive-edge in a "world is flat" economy. This level-playing-field global market now requires its manufacturers to think outside of the box.

SME Canada General Manager Steve Prahalis stated, "Hargrove's appearance will generate great interest as he truly is one of those thinkers at the forefront of Canadian manufacturing."

The CAW's national president since 1992, Hargrove will share his thoughts on such topics as how Canadian auto manufacturers need to adapt for survival, the next steps for Canada's automotive manufacturing business, and above all, how the nation can remain an innovative manufacturing leader. Delegates will also discover his ideas on how manufacturers and labourers can work together to be more competitive.

Hargrove's "action-oriented leadership style" and passion for Canadian manufacturing has made him an in-demand guest on national television shows and a sought-after lecturer at universities. This passion is also evident in his best-selling book, Labour of Love: The Fight to Create a More Humane Canada.
