Press release date: July 13, 2012

Twin pack of KBA web and sheetfed presses

German print enterprise ADV Schoder will soon be firing up a high-performance B1 (41in) KBA Rapida 106 sheetfed press followed four months later by a cutting-edge KBA C16 commercial web press. A full-service printer and finisher of catalogues, direct mail, magazines and supplements, the company operates a total of eight presses - one sheetfed and seven web - at two plants in Gersthofen and Augsburg. The new acquisitions will replace two older non-KBA presses at the Gersthofen plant.

ADV Schoder, which last year celebrated its 150th anniversary, made the move for quality reasons and to provide a strong basis for future growth. Management made a conscious decision not to expand production capacity because it did not want to run the risk of having to trim prices to maintain plant utilisation levels.

The highly automated KBA Rapida 106 will mainly print covers and high-quality add-ins for catalogues and magazines, but will also be used to print upmarket catalogues and magazines as well as shorter runs of direct mail. To equip it for this work the press is configured as five colours with an aqueous coater. It is scheduled to come on stream in August.

The KBA C16, which was designed and engineered specifically for short runs and frequent job changes, will go live in December this year. While it will primarily be used for bulk mail, mailing components and inserts, it, too, will print covers and additional products for catalogues and magazines, on stock weighing up to 250gsm (the equivalent of 140lb index). Comprising five double printing couples with a broadsheet delivery, the C16 will be equipped with an aqueous coater, a perforator and a die-stamping unit to ensure that it can deliver not only the quality excellence but also the versatility the company demands. Inline colour measurement and control software from System Brunner and Quad-Tech have been specified to safeguard stable colour throughout the production run.
