MINNEAPOLIS - When Blue Smoke opened its second New York City location, the restaurant's owners wanted a natural-meets-industrial décor evocative of the original site without being directly imitative. The ceiling treatment also needed to provide acoustical control - a vital component in a busy Manhattan restaurant. Blue Smoke selected ceiling products from pinta acoustic - BIOLINE® Organic Wood Ceiling Tiles and SQUARELINE® Metal Ceiling Tiles - for the new Battery Park City location.
"We wanted the ceiling to have an industrial look to contrast with the rough-hewn natural wood details," says Mark Maynard-Parisi, managing partner, Blue Smoke. "Our first location's décor, in the Flatiron area, features blackened steel, oak and an open ceiling. We maintained continuity in the second location, with an ebonized wood floor, open ceiling and unrefined look. The new restaurant opened in December, business is great, and the acoustics and ambience are really good."
The BIOLINE Organic Wood Ceiling Tiles in the restaurant are custom gray, cut in 6-inch widths. They are interspersed with chrome SQUARELINE Ultra Metal Ceiling Tiles with a charcoal fleece acoustic backer. In total, 896 square feet of BIOLINE were used and 1,200 square feet of SQUARELINE. The ceiling features an open area surrounded by the pinta products which also hide conduit pipes and speakers. Light fixtures and sprinkler heads are enclosed in the BIOLINE strips.
BIOLINE Wood Ceiling Tiles are available in solid finish, organic texture and linear planks. Solid-finish tiles contain 70 percent recycled material. Organic-texture tiles are made from 80 percent recycled material. These tiles absorb 55 to 80 percent of sound directed toward them, with an NRC of 0.55 to 0.80. Linear plank tiles are available in real wood veneer on a color-matched core made from 100 percent recycled fiber. BIOLINE tiles have no added urea-formaldehyde.
SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling Tiles are made from galvanized, powder-coated steel in chrome, white and black. SQUARELINE Metal Ceiling tiles contain 35 to 55 percent recycled material. An optional fleece acoustic backer is available for additional sound absorption, with an NRC of 0.55 to 0.60.
Both BIOLINE and SQUARELINE tiles fit pinta's and other ceiling grids.
