The REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of chemical substances) regulation currently covers the safe use of 73 chemicals listed by the European Chemicals Agency, while the RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) directive restricts the use of six hazardous materials used in the manufacture of electric and electronic products, including lead, mercury, cadmium and chromium. Both the regulation and the directive are important for manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment who make or sell products in the European Union.
