On October 25-26, 2011, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) will host an international workshop on biotechnology in Geneva.

The workshop is intended to promote dialogue among organizations actively involved in biotechnology standardization, enhance coordination among key players, and identify recommendations and priority action items for consideration by existing ISO technical and governance bodies. A goal of the workshop will to provide a framework for analyzing and proposing mechanisms for improved coordination and harmonization of and cooperation on standardization activities in biotechnology. According to workshop organizers, the event will give particular focus to:

Terms and definitions regarding biotechnology
Measurement and characterization: techniques of analysis (horizontal)
Methods of analysis specific to industrial applications

Participants will identify and exchange information on existing standards and related information resources, deliverables expected in the short-term, standardization programs, and emerging needs in the fields indicated above, including pre- and co-normative research (PNR and CNR) and certified reference materials.

Expected outputs from the workshop include draft proposals concerning mechanisms and agreements supporting coordination and collaboration, a shared vision of the evolution of international standards to meet the needs and opportunities identified, and specific recommendations to ISO regarding activities and/or work items to be initiated.

Interested participants are requested to register and also indicate their intention to attend to Steven P. Cornish, ANSI senior director for international policy (isot@ansi.org).
