Bayer MaterialScience at World Adhesive Conference and Expo 2008:

Pittsburgh, April 21, 2008 - The development of polyurethane dispersions has seen some groundbreaking innovations over the past decades and one of the most important was the use of hydrophilically modified isocyanates as crosslinkers for waterborne dispersions. Using water reactive polyisocyanates in a waterborne system has made it possible to significantly increase the performance level of waterborne polymers for many desired applications.

Dr. Wolfgang Henning, Bayer MaterialScience AG, will discuss this topic as he presents "Water-based One Component Latent Reactive Polyurethane Adhesives: An Interesting Technology to Simplify the Bonding Process" at the World Adhesive Conference and Expo (WAC). The paper is also authored by Mr. Joerg Buechner, Bayer MaterialScience AG, and Dr. Jeffrey Dormish, Bayer MaterialScience LLC.

This year's WAC is being held in Miami, from April 20-23 at the InterContintental Miami, where Henning is presenting the paper.

According to the authors, heat-activated dispersions based on semi-crystalline polyurethane polymers have been established in demanding industrial applications wherever synthetic materials need to be adhesively bonded. These dispersion adhesives not only have outstanding adhesion performance, but are also environmentally friendly.

Many applications exist that require adhesives to exhibit good flow at low heat activation temperatures but also show high final heat resistance and excellent elevated temperature bond performance. These conflicting performance requirements can be achieved through the above described performance using polyurethane dispersions with hydrophilically modified polyisocyanates in a two-component system.

The presentation will summarize the basic principles of this adhesive system and detail its many options and advantages for users. Specifically, Henning will address:

o Basic principles of the system o Raw materials for latent reactive PUD systems o Technology options for latent reactive PUDs, ranging from latent reactive dispersion to precoatings and films o Drying of latent reactive films o Stability of pre-coatings or reactive films o Wetting behavior o Application options and new developments o Optimized joining of hybrid materials

"The presentation will demonstrate that reactive pre-coatings or films can be commercially produced, the storage stability is reliable, the reactivity can be adjusted and the desired crosslinking to meet high performance requirements can be achieved," said Henning. "The industry has already recognized these advantages and new developments are on the way in various application segments."
