Bayer MaterialScience at American Coatings Show 2008:

New coatings formulations exhibit improved chemical and scratch resistance

Charlotte, N.C., June 2, 2008 -- Three main factors drive today's coatings market: the environment, efficiency and quality. For example, environmental considerations compel formulators to comply with VOC regulations by developing high solids or waterborne products, while the need for increased efficiency has resulted in faster curing systems or reduction in layers of the coating. In terms of quality, durability can be improved by manipulating the chemistry of polyurethane raw materials.

With these key drivers in mind, Bayer Materials Science (BMS) recently developed new aliphatic polyisocyanates with higher functionality to improve chemical and scratch resistance of coatings. The advantages of using these new polyisocyanates in coatings formulations will be the focus of a presentation by a BMS scientist at the American Coatings Show and Conference (ACS), June 2-5 in Charlotte, N.C.

Improved Properties Offered by Higher-Functionality Aliphatic Polyisocyanates will be presented by Patricia B. Jacobs, Bayer MaterialScience (BMS) LLC, during the event's Polyurethanes session on June 3. The paper was co-authored by colleagues Myron W. Shaffer, BMS LLC, and Markus Mechtel, and Reinhard Halpaap, both of BMS AG.

The authors explain that light-stable aliphatic polyisocyanates are well known in the industry as crosslinkers for high-performance coatings applications. Two-component polyurethane coatings, which can be adjusted to meet the requirements of multiple markets and substrates, set the standard for appearance, durability, chemical resistance. They offer a unique combination of toughness and flexibility that other coatings chemistries can't match.

In the presentation, Jacobs will describe BMS' newly developed HDI-based trimer/ allophanate crosslinker with a functionality greater than 4.0, which was achieved without sacrificing a workable viscosity. The greater crosslink density made possible by the new trimer/allophanate crosslinkers results in coatings that exhibit improved performance properties, such as increased scratch and chemical resistance for metal, plastic and wood substrates.

"The uses in automotive refinishing applications, for example, outshine some of the coatings formulations of the past - specifically with scratch resistance and the retention of a refinish clearcoat," said Jacobs, whose presentation will feature results of several tests designed to determine scratch and chemical resistance. "We substituted the allophanate/trimer for the asymmetric trimer in the control formulation, which improved initial scratch resistance by more than 25 percent. "Two-component polyurethane coatings offer a combination of properties for high-end applications that is unmatched," continued Jacobs. "By adding a high functionality allophanate trimer to the mix, the formulations will yield highly scratch and chemical resistant coatings that adhere to environmental, efficiency and quality drivers that are key to succeeding in today's market."
