New central chiller provides increased efficiency and energy savings
Pittsburgh, - Bayer MaterialScience LLC's commitment to sustainability is not only evident in the products it produces and the markets it serves, but also in how it operates its facilities. Underscoring this commitment, the company's South Deerfield, Mass., facility recently installed a new energy-efficient central chiller.
"The new central chiller supports Bayer's commitment to sustainability by streamlining our process cooling system," said Shaun Gaus, general manager, Functional Films NAFTA, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "By switching to one central chiller, we will save more than 400,000 kWhrs annually and reduce maintenance costs."
The new cooling system replaces many small systems that were running inefficiently, causing maintenance issues and downtime. The central chiller - offering improved reliability and energy savings - maintains a desired water temperature of 45° to 50° F in an insulated piping system.
Bayer MaterialScience LLC incorporated the new central chiller into its existing cooling tower system and process water loop. By doing this, the South Deerfield facility was able to focus the chilled water system on critical process points. The new chiller also allows for quicker and easier monitoring of the system.
The South Deerfield facility manufactures and sells thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), polycarbonate (PC) and polycarbonate blend, and other specialty film and sheet for use in various market segments, including medical, sports/recreation, automotive and safety/security. The 147,000-square-foot facility is ISO 9001 registered.
