Bayer MaterialScience at American Coatings Show 2008:Bayer MaterialScience highlights waterborne UV coatings for plastics Performance of UV-curing polyurethane dispersions in several application areas on display

Charlotte, N.C., June 2, 2008 -- A new generation of waterborne UV coating polyurethane dispersions is now making it possible to formulate coatings for plastics with performance properties that could previously only be attained by two-component polyurethane systems or solventborne UV systems.

UV-curing polyurethane dispersions in three application areas - hard high-gloss clearcoat over basecoat, single-layer metallic coatings and soft-touch coatings - will be on display at the Bayer MaterialScience booth, #1545, during the American Coatings Show, June 2-5, 2008, at the Charlotte Convention Center.

This new generation of waterborne UV-curing polyurethane dispersions has properties that were formerly available only in two-component polyurethane systems or solventborne UV systems.

Polyurethane coatings are an outstanding choice for coating plastics. They have outstanding appearance and resistance properties and excellent adhesion to many plastic substrates. Furthermore, due to the nature of the urethane linkage, polyurethane coatings offer a unique combination of flexibility and toughness. Also, it's important to note that the new waterborne coatings for plastics provide a viable green alternative to solvent-borne polyurethane coatings.

In addition, coatings are applied to plastic substrates not just for protection, but also for haptic properties, such as a leather-like or rubbery soft feel. Traditional solvent-borne or solvent-free UV cure coatings formulations cannot achieve the soft-touch effect that is possible with one-component formulations.

"Waterborne UV technology offers a high-quality, single-layer pigmented system that is a new and economical alternative to two-compoment polyurethane systems or solvent-borne UV systems," says Patricia Jacobs, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "Water as solvent is a favorable substitute - economically as well as ecologically - and now new waterborne UV coatings products are available for manufacturers of a variety of products that utilize plastics, such as mobile phones."
