BIO to Co-Sponsor Import Safety Summit



WASHINGTON, D.C. (Wednesday, July 02, 2008) - The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) will join with 12 other trade associations to sponsor an inter-industry summit on import safety on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 in Washington, D.C.

The summit will bring together a variety of industries, from food to healthcare to consumer products, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to discuss how to continue to enhance import safety in an increasingly global marketplace.

"BIO welcomes this inter-industry discussion of best practices and how to strengthen public-private partnerships to further improve import safety," stated BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood. "BIO and our member companies remain committed to working with the Food and Drug Administration to better assure the safety, purity and potency of imported drugs and biologics. The continuing safety of our products for the patients we serve is our top priority."

The summit will feature a keynote address by the Honorable Michael O. Leavitt, Secretary of HHS, and panels on standards and certification; medical products; food industry; consumer products; and the challenges and possible solutions for import safety. The summit will be held from 8:30am to 5pm at the Grand Hyatt Washington at 1000 H Street NW in Washington, D.C.
