WASHINGTON -- The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) announced today its selection of Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA) as a Legislator of the Year for 2013-2014. Representative Farr receives the award in conjunction with today’s BIO Legislative Day Fly-In.

“Additionally, through his leadership on the Appropriations Committee he has championed efforts that help bring new therapies and cures for life threatening diseases to market.”

“Innovation in the biotechnology industry is a key ingredient to growing our economy and creating American jobs,” said Farr. “The recent debate over the sequestration of FDA user fees has shown the role government can play in either supporting or stifling that innovation. I am honored to be recognized by BIO for my commitment to biotechnology and I look forward to our continued work together to expand this vital industry.”

“As ranking member of the Agricultural Appropriations Subcommittee, Congressman Farr has distinguished himself through leadership on critically important issues, including responsible funding for the FDA, and the release of sequestered FDA user fees,” said BIO President and CEO Jim Greenwood. “Additionally, through his leadership on the Appropriations Committee he has championed efforts that help bring new therapies and cures for life threatening diseases to market.”

“The life science industry in California generates more than $96 billion in total revenue and provides jobs for over 260,000 people. Congressman Farr has been an invaluable resource for the biotechnology community – both in California’s 20th District and the nation at large,” said Greenwood. “We thank him for outstanding leadership and dedication to supporting the innovative capacity and job-creating potential of American life science companies.”

More than 250 biotechnology industry representatives from over 40 states, representing hundreds of thousands of American workers, will participate in hundreds of meetings with Members of the House and Senate during the BIO Legislative Day Fly-In. Participants will discuss issues critical to the biotechnology industry including, adequate reimbursement for vital therapies under Medicare, FDA funding, tax policy, and capital formation issues relevant to biotechnology companies.
