BIO Applauds Navy, USDA Leadership on Advanced Biofuel Procurement
WASHINGTON--The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) today thanked Navy Secretary Ray Mabus and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack for announcing advanced biofuel procurement opportunities through the Farm to Fleet program. Since 2010, the Navy and USDA have worked together, under a Memorandum of Understanding, to maximize the use of renewable energy, which meets important national and energy security goals.
Brent Erickson, executive vice president of BIO’s Industrial & Environmental Section, said, “Advanced biofuels are key to the military’s operational security, reducing reliance on oil from unstable parts of the world and diversifying supplies. The Navy’s leadership in procuring advanced biofuels will encourage rapid scale up of new technologies and construction of capacity. The USDA can help to build the necessary supply chains of sustainable, renewable biomass supplies. BIO and its member companies welcome today’s announcement.”
