BAE Systems at the Forefront of Air Defence Radar Technology

AR 327 Commander

BAE Systems is a leader in air defence radar technology with the new Commander SL radar which will be displayed at the LIMA exhibition.

The Commander SL is a versatile long-range tactical radar operating in the S Band of frequencies. Building on almost 70 years of BAE Systems' heritage in radar design and development, the Commander SL Radar incorporates the very latest solid-state transmitter/receiver design, software signal processing, advanced digital tracking and commercial off the shelf equipment.

Proven across a range of extreme environmental conditions, the robust and agile Commander SL radar provides consistent and reliable performance coupled with local and integrated Command and Control of air defence forces. Operating from either prepared or unprepared locations, the versatile Commander SL radar provides operational flexibility through rapid redeployment and full tactical mobility by land, sea and air.

Although designed as a fully mobile system, the Commander radar is equally suited to static operations and can, therefore, be used as both a 'backbone' sensor and as a highly-capable deployable gap-filling radar.

The Commander SL is an evolution of the successful AR327 Commander, which is currently in service with the UK Royal Air Force (RAF) and a number of other customers worldwide.

Earlier in 2007 the UK Ministry of Defence awarded BAE Systems a contract, worth more than £30 million, to supply one new and one upgraded Commander Air Defence Radar system to the UK Royal Air Force. The system will enhance the security of UK airspace, in support of Homeland Defence.

Steve Kilvington, Export Sales Manager, BAE Systems Integrated System Technologies (Insyte) said "There has already been significant interest world-wide and the Commander radar has 10 years proven operational capability in various environments.
