Avionica Releases Iridium(TM) Portal Technology under Open Source License

MIAMI, Feb. 7 -- At the recent ARINC Datalink (DLK) Users Forum in San Diego, California, Avionica announced the release of its Iridium(TM) Portal product source code to the aviation community. The announcement was well-received by the community, including OEMs and operators.

"Avionica is committed to promoting Iridium as the communications medium of choice for the Future Air Navigation System (FANS-1), and are commencing trials with our commercial and technology partners this summer," states president Raul Segredo. "In the interest of avoiding the patent race that our industry experienced in implementing WiFi, we've decided to share enabling technologies with the community by following the IT lead industry's lead."

In its present state, the Iridium satellite system cannot accept pre- emptive Air Traffic Control calls to the cockpit (does not support call waiting). Avionica's Iridium(TM) Portal technology provides this capability.

The Iridium system is also SIM-card based, requiring that airline operators either exchange SIM cards when equipment is replaced (as with most cell-phones), or provision more costly, failure-prone, remotely mounted SIM- card holders in the aircraft. Avionica's Iridium(TM) Portal avoids this problem by maintaining an internal relationship between SIM-card number and aircraft registration. The relationship between SIM card and aircraft is automatically reset after an Avionica satLINK(TM) unit is installed.

The portal also provides redundancy. By attaching Iridium(TM) radios directly to the Portal platform, airline operators can maintain communications links with their fleets even if Internet or telephony connections fail. And since Iridium-to-Iridium communications are cheaper than Iridium-to-ground communications, airlines save money.

Avionica will be releasing the Iridium(TM) Portal technology under the GNU GPLv3 license. Under these terms, any licensee who makes improvements to the source must re-submit those improvements to the community under like terms.
