Emerging Robotics Pavilion at Automate 2011 Focuses on the Future
(Ann Arbor, Michigan USA) - An emerging robotics pavilion focused on the future of robotics will be featured at Automate 2011 at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois, March 21-24.
"Automate 2011 offers 170 exhibitors focused on today's products and solutions, as well as a special tribute to the 50th anniversary of the installation of the first industrial robot, so this Emerging Robotics pavilion allows us to also look into the future," said Jeff Burnstein, President of Robotic Industries Association, the trade group sponsoring Automate 2011.
"While the majority of robotics developments over the past 50 years have been in factory automation, robots have now moved into homes, hospitals, space, undersea, education, entertainment, and retail environments, among others," noted Burnstein.
Among the featured display in the Emerging Robotics pavilion is a telepresence robot from Anybots (Mountain View, California). Telepresence robots can stand in for a person, such as at an office meeting or at home, controlled from a remote location. "This seems a lot more interesting and interactive than a traditional teleconference," Burnstein said.
Innovo Labs (Carson City, Nevada) will demonstrate the next generation of robotic companion pets, which blur the line between technology and life by integrating organic articulation, sensory response, and autonomous behavior. "For people who want a pet that responds to human interaction but doesn't need to be taken outside or left at the kennel, I think this could be the ticket," said Burnstein.
Motoman Robotics, a division of Yaskawa America, Inc. (West Carrollton, Ohio) will demonstrate its dual-arm SDA robot that performs complex operations that previously could not be done by robots. "In this case, the left hand truly does know what the right hand is doing," Burnstein observed.
Mobile robots that can be used in hospitals, offices, warehouses, homes and other environments will be displayed by Adept Technology, (Pleasanton, California), Schunk Modular Robotics (Morrisville, North Carolina) and CYCOGS, LLC (Sauk City, Wisconsin). "Advances in mobility, sensing, and grasping technologies are among the main reasons we'll see robots working in closer contact with humans in the future," Burnstein noted.
Finally, the pavilion will have a video demonstration of EMILY, a new lifeguard robot from Hydronalix (Tucson, Arizona). "Some ocean riptides are so powerful that human rescues can't be performed successfully, which makes this innovation a true life saver," commented Burnstein.
Automate 2011 is open to people 16 years of age and older - show tickets are free (but there is a charge for the accompanying technical conference).
