Arthur M. Dinitz was the recipient of the Kenneth A. Stonex National Roadside Safety Award on January 24, 2006. It was presented by the Roadside Safety Design Committee at the 85 th Annual Meeting of the National Academy of Science Transportation Research Board (TRB) in Washington D.C.
The committee Chair, Dean L. Sicking, Director of the Midwest Roadside Safety Facility at the University of NebraskaLincoln, presented the award: "in recognition and appreciation of almost four decades of services to and leadership of the roadside safety community; for his service in numerous leadership roles in The American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA), the Civil Engineering Research Foundation, and the Institute of Traffic Engineers; for his visionary leadership of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official's Task Force 13, including support for the development of an industrywide laboratory accreditation; for development of breakaway coupler systems that have saved countless lives over the last two decades; and for his contributions to the development of improved barrier delineation systems and high friction materials for use on bridge decks. His unwavering dedication to highway safety and industry leadership have reduced highway injuries and fatalities across the nation. The benefits of his efforts will continue to accrue for many years to come."
In 1968, Arthur Dinitz founded Transpo Industries, Inc., developing roadway safety devices and products that would enhance the safety of the traveling public. His first product was a waterfilled energyabsorbing bumper, installed successfully on more than four thousand taxicabs in New York City. In continuing a search for new and innovative products, Transpo Industries introduced crash cushions, omnidirectional breakaways for sign supports and light poles, airport jetblast & perimeter security fencing and a highwayrail grade safety crossing system. Transpo developed polymer concrete materials and precast technology for rapid rehabilitation and preservation of bridges, roads, tunnels and runways.
Art Dinitz has been a leader at the national level in promoting the development and use of new materials and technologies in the transportation industry. In 2004, Mr. Dinitz was a recipient of the American Road and Transportation Builders Association (ARTBA) award for being one of America's Top 100 Private Sector Transportation Design and Construction Professionals of the 20 th Century. In 2002, Arthur received the John "Jake" Landen Memorial Highway Safety Award, recognizing outstanding contributions to highway safety.
