Enhances Flexibility of Flagship AIdirector and AIremote Products in Diverse Network Environments

DUBLIN, Ohio, Aug. 21 -- Applied Innovation Inc. (NASDAQ:AINN) today announced product line enhancements to support secure wireless connectivity between remote sites and regional/central management locations over broadband cellular networks, namely CDMA and GSM/GPRS. The company's remote site management capabilities already support diverse wide area network options, including T1/E1, fiber, and DDS, and with the addition of cellular technologies, customers can choose the best WAN option for each remote location.

The capability enhances the company's flagship AIremote(TM) product -- a LINUX-based, environmentally hardened, intelligent remote site management device that monitors network communications, power, and environmental equipment. The new option transfers alerts and status metrics to central and/or regional operations centers from even the most remote locations, where fixed-line communications are too costly or even unavailable.

The Applied Innovation (AI) remote site management console, AIdirector, provides configuration and management capabilities, pass-through console support, and important security features, all over the wireless infrastructure. From AIdirector, operations personnel and field technicians can:

o Monitor and control remote network communications devices, such as routers, switches, and base transceiver stations; o Perform routine maintenance checks, such as verification of tower lights or checking generator fuel levels, battery voltage, and temperature without a site visit; o Receive notification of unauthorized site access, out-of-spec equipment readings, and power outages, including failover and the ability to isolate failures between rectifiers and converters; o Exert control measures to diagnose and correct problems, including tilt adjustments to RET antennas, generator start/stop, or to request the remaining life of batteries.

AIdirector also ensures security of the solution by issuing encrypted keys and digital certificates for secure VPN communications over the cellular infrastructure to ensure that only authorized personnel access highly sensitive sites.

The robustness of the solution is further solidified with the AIremote's ability to automatically reestablish a call back to the operations center if the communication link is dropped.

"The wireless capability for alarm transport and 2-way control brings unprecedented flexibility and cost savings to AI's remote site management solution," said Eric Langille, AI's senior vice president of operations. "Our wireless service provider customers can now utilize their own wireless infrastructure for secure remote site management, and commercial customers who previously could not justify fixed-line connectivity to certain locations have a new option. We continue to strive for ways to help our customers eliminate physical site visits by developing innovative remote management techniques."

Secure wireless management communication is available with AIdirector version 2.0 and AIremote version 2.3; both are currently in field test with a leading international fixed-line and mobile operator as well as a Tier 1 U.S. wireless service provider.
