Energy specialist speaks about the US Government's focus on the energy crisis and how data centers will be forced to become more energy efficient
STAMFORD, Conn., Nov. 5 / -- Aperture Technologies Inc., the leading global provider of software for managing the physical infrastructure of data centers, has completed its Annual Executive Advisory Board in New York City.
The event was attended by senior data center professionals from America's largest companies in the financial, retail, telecommunications and pharmaceutical sectors. Themes covered included the 'greening of the data center,' the impact of IT on the physical world and a keynote from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
The speaker, Andrew Fanara, industry expert and the lead author of the EPA's August report to Congress on "Server and Data Center Energy Efficiency," delivered new statistics on national and data center energy consumption and spoke about the US Government's role to become a catalyst to encourage the data center operators to pursue energy efficiency opportunities to control energy use. Fanara referred to data that will impact data centers across America and the globe. One study he noted revealed that 40% of data centers have run out of space, power, and cooling capacity without notice and another study predicted that 90% of companies will have outage problems due to limitations of power availability during the growing energy crisis in the following years.

The EPA's presentation at our Executive Advisory Board helped reinforce that money is no longer the reason for monitoring, managing and reducing energy consumption: this is a serious concern and has real environmental impact. During the Aperture Technologies Executive Advisory Board it was a priority to deliver insight into relevant topics impacting data center managers such as the challenges faced by American businesses around energy consumption and the climate change. In the keynote, Fanara discussed the potential risks posed to businesses during an energy crisis. He emphasized that "there is a growing demand for energy management strategies." In addition, he cited research showing that over the last six years computing performance has improved 25%, disproportionately to the 8% increase in energy efficiency, creating an exponentially growing energy problem within data centers.
The EPA's report determined that in 2006 American data centers spent approximately $4.5 billion on energy. Fanara concluded his talk by discussing potential scenarios theorized by the EPA and the outcomes on energy consumption. They deduced a data center growth rate that projected energy spending to increase to $7.4 billion by 2011, but if businesses can improve their data center operations by instituting and monitoring more efficient equipment then it could be possible to have data centers consume less energy than their current state.
