First article inspection is critical when molding high quality products. But it is a costly, time consuming and tedious process where expense and lead time swell when inspecting multicavity or family molds-or when parts have complex geometry. It is also a process that is dependent on the quality of the inspection plan.
Cross-Sectional Scanning breaks the link between time and the number of parts or inspection points. It also severs dependency on the flawless inspection plans required by conventional technologies. Additionally, its capabilities go beyond those of CMM's and other scanners by allowing you to inspect internal features of parts molded in virtually any plastic.
First article inspection with Cross-Sectional Scanning delivers ultra-dense point clouds that allow you to inspect hundreds, even thousands, of features on multiple parts as fast as an inspection of a single point on a single part. The key is 100 percent data capture of every part, including internal, inaccessible features.
For high volume injection molding, multi-cavity tools and family molds are the norm. With conventional inspection processes, time is a function of the number of parts from the tool. With Cross-Sectional Scanning, batch processing and templates let you inspect multiple parts in nearly the same time as a single piece.
Batch processing scans multiple parts in a single operation with one set up. Templates save your inspection work from the first piece of a multi-cavity mold and let you automatically inspect all of the parts from the other cavities in much less time and with much less effort. You can even use the Cross-Sectional Scanning data to detect cavity-to-cavity variance.
In one study, first article inspection of an 16 cavity mold showed that Cross-Sectional Scanning slashed inspection time by 89 percent, when compared to a CMM inspection process.
Complete inspection done faster is just the beginning. Cross-Sectional Scanning combines the best of CMMs and laser scanners and adds more capability. With Cross-Sectional Scanning, you will have a complete data set at your disposal. So, if a new area of concern arises, you can check features without repeating the 3D scanning process. Also, Cross-Sectional Scanning can handle clear (transparent) parts that stymie laser scanners, and it can inspect many types of complex, elastomeric parts that are problematic for touch probe systems.
With Cross-Sectional Scanning, you get more data from more types of parts without investing more time and money. It is the complete first article inspection tool that gives you the whole picture when qualifying injection molds.
