ESSEN, Germany, September 15, 2010 -- Alcan Engineered Products - a business unit of Rio Tinto -showcases a unique range of innovative aluminium-based products offering custom ready solutions to key industry sectors such as aerospace, automotive, transportation, packaging, renewable energy at the ALUMINIUM 2010.

Alcan EP showcases products for a wide range of applications. Among these are:
- Solar Surface(R) Selfclean: Alcan EP has developed an innovative functionality for solar mirrors with two protective coatings that give mirror surfaces a "selfcleaning" effect. This leading-edge technology ensures that solar mirrors always remain clean and efficient by preventing the build-up of dirt and other corrosive materials.
- AIRWARE(TM) Tomorrow's Aircraft Technology: A comprehensive offer of complementary and high-performance Low Density Alloys, which are strongly suited to feature in all parts of the aircraft primary structure. AIRWARE(TM) technology's high technological content makes it perfectly suited for optimizing aircraft production processes.
- New high-tech aluminium profiles for hybrid engines. The aluminium profile is being produced within extremely tight tolerances in the micro-meter range and integrated into the stator section of the electric engine. Hybrid cars can be operated by using only an electric transmission and operate nearly completely emission free. This engineering solution will contribute by increasing customer demand for low-emission hybrid cars.
- Alcan Extrusions and Automotive Structures, part of Alcan EP, announced to supply 100km of aluminium power rail for a metro project in the Indian metropolis Bangalore. In addition to the production of the aluminium power rail system, Alcan will provide an engineering and service package through the Railtech-Alu-Singen Joint-Venture.
Alcan EP also announced that it has strengthened its innovation programme based on a multiyear cooperation agreement with Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. In this context Francesco Stellacci, tenured associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was appointed full professor at the Institute of Materials Science. The objective of the cooperation between Alcan EP and EPFL is to accelerate the technical, commercial development of lightweight materials for applications in major industry sectors.
