Air Transport Association Challenges DOT Rates and Charges Policy

WASHINGTON, Sept. 5, 2008 - The Air Transport Association (ATA), the industry trade organization for the U.S. airlines, today filed a challenge to the Department of Transportation (DOT) Policy for Airport Rates and Charges, which was recently amended to allow airports to adopt a form of congestion pricing:

"Like DOT's other misguided attempts to foist unproven economic theory on the traveling public, these measures would do nothing to address the underlying causes of congestion and delay and would only make flying more expensive for passengers. The solution to congestion and delay is for the government to modernize its air traffic control system, expand airspace capacity and, in the Northeast, expedite the New York/New Jersey/Philadelphia airspace redesign initiative."

ATA airline members and their affiliates transport more than 90 percent of all U.S. airline passenger and cargo traffic. For additional information about the industry, visit www.airlines.org.
