Agricultural Drawbar Jacks Standard Updated



ST JOSEPH, MICHIGAN - The American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) announces the approval by the International Organization of Standardization (ISO) of an ISO New Work Item Proposal to update and improve the requirements for the performance and fitting of jacks for agricultural trailers and trailed equipment.

ISO 12140:1998, "Agricultural machinery - Agricultural trailers and trailed equipment - Drawbar jacks" will be reviewed and updated by volunteers from 12 or more countries. These volunteers will be led by ASABE member John Fisher of Alamo Group in Seguin, Texas.

ISO 12140 specifies the requirements for the performance and fitting of original and replacement jacks for adjusting the height of the drawbars of agricultural trailers and trailed equipment. This standard also includes recommendations for designers and gives requirements for testing and marking the jacks.

The project team will work to enhance, define, clarify, and update performance criteria within the standard. Existing comments and recommendations filling 18 pages will provide a starting place for the team's work.

ASABE is the accredited administrator for the US technical advisory group to the ISO committee on Tractors and Machinery for Agriculture and Forestry (TC23), and seven of its subcommittees. Committee membership is open and typically comprises individuals with an academic or commercial interest in the subject matter. Participation in standards development benefits commerce as well as the public by ensuring issues such as consumer safety and evolving technology are addressed in a thorough and timely manner and by reducing trade barriers that can occur in the absence of standardization.
